Boat Building Challenge
One of the most powerful tools mathematics offers industry is
optimization. The ability to predict and design the best
“specimen” given various goals and constraints is lucrative. The
“Boat Building Challenge” places students in a situation in
which the mathematically savvy and construction apt student will
shine.
CHALLENGE:
Using one piece of laminated computer paper, design and build
the boat that holds the most weight without sinking.
STUDENTS WILL:
1. Build functions
2. Optimize
3. Understand constraints
4. Build a mathematical product
5. Experience the power of mathematics
