Boat Challenge

Extensions

1. Change the dimensions of the paper.
Instead of using 8.5 x 11, use 9 x 12 or 8 x 10.5, etc.
If this activity is repeated each year, this is a way to limit the amount of work that is passed down from one year’s students to the next.

2. Fix the volume, minimize surface area.

3. Place constraints on length, width, or height.
Require the boat to float in 3” of water and cannot touch bottom, or require the boat to be able to pass through a canal that is 5” wide, etc.

4. Add constraints such as cost or time.
For example, the boat must be constructed in 15 minutes, or base material cost a certain amount per square inch and side material cost so much per square inch.

5. Eliminate the option to use waste.

6. Limit the amount of tape available.

7. Consider efficiency of a design.
What happens to the ratio?

8. How does this ratio change as the dimensions of the paper change?
